# ~2 Z& S2 m8 p; Z$ V3 \( uHow reluctant am I to touch upon this subject! But “to leave the monastic order” presents a" n; }# ]8 F& P/ D4 Y4 @
) e) w* }+ a5 D, V4 K7 T. Rcruel reality we must face in the current time of five degenerations. Instead of dodging the issue,

^ r. X( b+ X* aI may as well look at it squarely and bravely.

今天，听到一位出家十几年的人，为烦恼所缠，已还俗好几个月了。听到这个消息，心里
# o [/ }$ w0 Y- v4 F L5 r& ^
2 @* U0 U" K; r6 i2 T G7 Q5 g9 P" }像吃了一只苍蝇般不是滋味。记得在他出家初期，也可算得上是闻思精进、戒律清净、智 n- n i' r! j. B# Q
4 T5 B( O: P5 ^慧日益增上的典范。他曾说过：“我只要活一天，决不还俗。让我还俗，还不如死掉。”

$ s5 n% D# [$ U这样一位下了很大决心的人，却食言还俗，十分令人痛心。
( ^9 ~. j4 d m4 O1 Z2 c! Z8 O
, ~3 g6 a' X3 u$ d8 T& K6 TA few months ago a monk, beset by afflictions, declared to renounce his monastic life of more; K7 U7 d8 Y: Q6 r" z; e

than 10 years. When I heard this news today, I got quite upset as if I had swallowed a fly. I recall

early on, his ordained peers had regarded him as a model by his diligent study and keeping pure1 ]. J0 x* D, k' I
' e- g$ G8 N. r8 ^8 X" f; }" fprecepts. Once he asserted: “As long as I am alive, I will never leave the monastic order even for1 ]. |1 ?+ J8 _: d* Y
% u: b' \% ]" X `! Zone day. For me, returning to the worldly life is worse than dying.” A person who proclaimed his

6 n' m7 v* f7 Z2 e5 x一大堆苦水，忙不迭地向我倾倒：“如今的生意太难做了！每天8小时，却挣不到十元钱。

想起以前出家时无忧无虑的生活，真像在天堂一样啊！唉！！”听了他的苦恼，我真不知

( M/ c' R- i1 p1 q3 {该如何应答。
0 ^! b* k7 E7 f. W) `: c |8 J# ]) A$ }9 j I
Over the phone, he veered away from discussing the Dharma, but instead tattled endlessly about/ l" r. c1 D9 [9 Q A( e5 q
A/ x1 J; Q. u' d8 r% qhis business. When I asked how it was going, he started to pour out to me his pent-up miseries:

[/ B6 d; E5 q# w“You know, it’s so difficult to do business these days! My hard labor of eight hours daily earns me8 w, M! e$ I$ z7 e- }0 k& q
! n6 r2 W6 }0 X: B, [$ D6 J- m# ^6 dless than 10 yuan. The ordained life at the monastery, as I recall now, was so peaceful and worry-
& j, ^$ {0 h9 ~+ }5 T4 T) ]6 Y. e) b3 e* v
free, almost like living in heaven! Alas!!” Hearing his complaints, I have no idea how to respond./ F+ o( N* Y! @. ^2 u5 `. _% F
9 R1 l6 p' R Q( r$ @1 K: E不过令我庆幸的是，他的见解至今尚未改变，对三宝的信心也没有退减，忏悔心恒时不离 ~; R( f8 Q$ Q& {3 g, q, \
( s2 x2 H; L2 H" Y/ z
左右。虽忙于生意，却不离念诵。

But there is some consolation for me: He is still holding onto his views and his faith in the Three, D; V0 l. U2 Y# ]( c* A. }
# P2 H2 j$ t1 y. [% VJewels has not waned. He takes every opportunity to do the purification practice and also f- o/ Y$ }$ N% x
9 A& u4 O* t* R& Zremembers to recite mantras while busy with his shop.
/ e1 {/ x8 c) W A" Z* v* @. h" P# }9 w( E9 j# W
喇拉曲智仁波切曾有一位很有名的弟子因故还俗，但别人毁谤他时，仁波切却说：“毁谤

别人是错误的，他的身体虽然还俗了，心却没有还俗。”. S# i( R1 P+ S9 s9 ^% W
; {+ P) h6 \4 k' A: NOnce, one of Lhala Chodri Rinpoche’s main disciples left the monastic order for some reason.

When others condemned him, Rinpoche said: “It’s not right to speak badly about others./ B: x9 N; g' B0 J

佛经云：“宁可毁尸罗，切莫坏正见。”《中观四百论》中也说：“宁毁犯尸罗，不损坏

; G! q" l4 c+ u; F" oIt is stated in the scripture: “Better to break the precepts than to damage the right view.” In the6 e8 }7 n. l6 M) `: E' M

Four Hundred Verses of Madhyamaka, it says: “One would rather transgress edicts than abandon6 H5 X& n U, P, o5 |
5 g% I! M9 Y# [$ Bthe right view.” If a person has ruined his right view but, instead of confessing sincerely, he
% y" ^! f l7 Z3 h, |$ V4 h, |. R' R" o, S6 q$ B o3 J
points the finger at the guru or the Three Jewels, then this person’s mind is incurably corrupt,9 b2 k: E- ?' P, C

even though his body has not returned to the secular world.1 `4 z4 W$ h3 |1 r6 `# D" g- H: A3 ^. A
