. c6 v0 _* f1 G1 q6 o今天是“五·四”青年节,从1919年五四运动至今已经历了近百年的历史。随着时代的变
' t2 U; @1 c7 O6 @0 K& Z8 f5 \% n
4 K1 k: i: `" ^6 A* X! X迁,青年们早已不必再为反封建、反压迫而战,他们以各种形式庆祝着这一节日。

Today is Youth Day; it was more than a hundred years ago when the May 4th Movement shook
8 C0 J  G; h/ e0 }# h' u! C1 X% U
the nation in 1919. As time goes by, however, young people these days no longer emphasize0 W% j/ T& u/ B# q; H/ {

0 w' B+ m0 D* X1 ?* f2 Vfighting feudalism or oppression as their earlier peers did. Instead, they choose to celebrate their
; x% Z4 i; }  c8 |
- d" E+ G' U* n$ Dday in various ways.
+ a4 y- d& d& s$ I4 U4 R, b& Y: v8 Y- @$ c
我也加入了一帮有很多青年人组成的行列,举行了一次大规模的放生活动。三艘船承载着, H% F0 d7 B8 _: s% \& r

& ]( d# n; A1 X3 G9 }7 K# J饱受死亡恐惧的海底居民,浩浩荡荡地驶往深海,除了厦门本地的信众,来自各地寺院、

6 m5 s* |9 {( J$ g佛学院的出家人,福州、台湾、香港等地的居士,约200名道友都参加了这次放生活动,出
' @6 N1 `) i, z' ~) I$ M2 L0 M( l& {5 i# x
家人的红黄僧衣,在家人五彩缤纷的各式服装,在蓝色大海的衬托下,形成了一道道靓丽( q2 D5 ?4 w& h8 T8 V( q+ U  N

+ E# E( s# M' M" w2 B2 F- e' a的风景。

! t8 w/ h% y4 s0 Y! k1 U1 K5 oI found myself in the company of young people to carry out large-scale life liberation. Three ships( x: g! Z0 O& G

" @- I0 |& P' E. Wloaded with many sea creatures whose lives were once at grave stake sailed off the coast in an/ ]7 x4 L4 ^4 f+ P" I/ E% i

impressive formation. The 200 or so participants included local Buddhists from Xiamen, monks
% J% _% I5 L+ e* v- e
! N. i" w# W) z4 g- R" Y( F) G4 ?and nuns from nearby monasteries and Buddhist Academies, as well as lay practitioners from
# I6 [3 {6 s# e6 ?5 x( i9 n5 V* H9 I% @- Y1 N+ k$ C% r
Fuzhou, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Against the blue sea, the maroon and yellow monastic robes. A! {* p7 V2 v

. ]6 n( j' s2 ?9 V) F, x" A7 yand laities’ attire of various colors stood out vividly and brightly. It was quite a beautiful sight to
: L( M. O, [' D! T( L! E7 o* i  A* c6 H/ v& {
behold.
0 n0 [  n5 e7 f, x$ x* G5 p# `: P4 X! Z1 t: {& B1 N
在我身居其中的四个月期间,每当午餐和晚餐之时,窗户外面时常会漂来宰杀海鲜的血腥

being prepared often wafted through the open window, polluting the fresh air of the shore, and

. s* h$ x5 t; `making my friend, also from Tibet, and me lose our appetites. We have long wished to save the, U3 {8 w+ V  m

. O' T9 F, m9 P0 g; }. Lpoor fish, shrimp, and so forth from meeting their ends at the knife, it is only today that we have) j8 R$ ~1 f6 H( u, R! {" h: p9 l

7 a2 K, }/ k1 ^+ [! A+ r3 R: Tcome to fulfill it. Even though the number of lives we are saving is incomparable with that of" l0 ]0 e" j9 f3 A: ~9 d$ ?. z
5 P% A% L0 Q4 i5 J# d, z: a
being killed in the whole city, we are still grateful for the opportunity.
0 ?( p( _8 H# Y( O' z. F
4 \+ e% s$ t7 V/ A- E记得曾有一县令名曰潘公,在他上任期间,制定县规命令百姓不得入江湖渔捕,犯者加罪) K' a4 O+ U% H& E- L, v8 ~

) W( E% d4 R: T9 t. Q. ?) v; J。当他后来去任时,水中发出号呼之声,如丧考妣。当地人听到后,莫不叹异。不知道什8 J6 b& C; D% q" i9 c7 ?7 b8 e

4 V$ f* x# c( M8 y" u么时候厦门也能有这样的好县令,也能使这些生灵免受刀俎之苦。不过,此地的放生之风* h" I7 k& `9 T% i8 d$ r/ i
! X: }  Z2 n$ i/ l
还算比较盛行,听说是一位居士发心印了一万册《放生功德文》,广为结缘,才使此风日
4 \% @6 \; N5 y% L7 r
! J( L( U$ X& \5 W/ V- o, j, D益兴盛,继而流传下来的。
- x4 W0 l/ Q, G) `) B0 r5 B( R
6 r+ W6 h4 p- g! Z
There was once a county magistrate name Poon Gong who forbade his subjects from catching

any live fish by instigating severe punishments for perpetrators. Years later when he was about

  I, l4 m, q5 I- ^0 q2 Qto leave his official post, a wailing sound as grief-stricken as if one’s parents had been lost was
, o$ K  e4 r& W0 ?& N
7 j$ [: A9 D4 G* ~; i% W6 iheard from the waters, filling people’s hearts with sadness and amazement. I often wonder
' }8 Y8 E3 e" S3 R
2 V, l4 n7 U- U+ B4 Kwhen such a benevolent county magistrate will appear again in Xiamen such that many beings
3 o4 h1 d1 U7 x& {  b) f1 _- Z0 [* v" s0 j8 r
will be saved from going under the knife. Nonetheless, the practice of lifesaving has been well
+ ]. J' {8 W8 ]5 \2 v1 n* h$ q3 U' f
& f- i" C5 T+ E& Y; `! b! F+ \. Paccepted here, due largely to, I was told, the free distribution of 10,000 booklets of The Merit of, g% Z' r6 R/ d  N" X& C6 e: Y$ j

7 W: E7 u% h  k9 N2 IReleasing Live Beings by an aspiring layperson. The tradition thus has gradually flourished and
) K& ]- E' ^/ U+ P) n6 ?$ k7 ]& l3 x0 Y; p
come down to this day.: i% |& e! O- l. A

; J& U/ |) `( p据说这是当地近年来规模最大的一次放生。不管规模大小,至少,这也是我们为这些生灵' j. s% O- ~* r' Z' J0 z7 ^

$ L# t% g, S$ \4 c3 o反对压迫而举行的一次抗议。善无大小,唯贵久长,日日增之,月月累之,但愿百年以后
+ T+ s$ l9 ?: B) x2 z

6 N: F0 n9 ]& H* U# P/ ]Today’s lifesaving activity reportedly is the largest one in recent years in the area. Regardless of) o* N) k" g7 f! S% @+ l/ j

whether the magnitude is large or small, at least we have made a revolt against oppression on# n: o4 w. M: m) F
" S8 `2 g2 g1 P$ @
behalf of these sea creatures. The value of good deeds depends not so much on their scale but1 Z1 r' o2 `0 Q: i9 q# }
% g  T% q1 C: c4 b. c3 R; X
more on their consistency. When virtues are practiced daily and enhanced monthly, we hope
( Q0 G  N. f/ E+ E6 Q0 A  U5 X/ E1 d' e; L
that one hundred years from now, the tragedy of taking other beings’ lives will no longer exist.$ K0 |8 c1 P+ v- `
