% [9 r+ b) T: m今天是“五·四”青年节,从1919年五四运动至今已经历了近百年的历史。随着时代的变$ Q8 b6 ~0 C! H, q  D" O5 h
( Q3 _0 h& ?+ r
迁,青年们早已不必再为反封建、反压迫而战,他们以各种形式庆祝着这一节日。

, s0 k6 \6 M- ?, F' T- O
Today is Youth Day; it was more than a hundred years ago when the May 4th Movement shook
- w& X% G! h, V3 W6 Z$ B+ _
& x" H) \. c& {the nation in 1919. As time goes by, however, young people these days no longer emphasize
' e0 N. s! M# T9 X
1 ^6 P( y& H* c& z! C' p/ h+ kfighting feudalism or oppression as their earlier peers did. Instead, they choose to celebrate their
! T2 q) c3 h2 H* r& G% e$ e3 D
2 i7 ?7 h& Y4 \" f. I1 gday in various ways.' g. ^2 ?" u1 Y  U# \9 l& t1 Q
  B' Q2 C* D& N/ `9 Q" [
我也加入了一帮有很多青年人组成的行列,举行了一次大规模的放生活动。三艘船承载着# B; \/ f6 o+ f  ?4 y# `. t" _
  O* b6 z/ c# G# h/ O" L" F
饱受死亡恐惧的海底居民,浩浩荡荡地驶往深海,除了厦门本地的信众,来自各地寺院、; c8 i8 d5 N& [3 E9 ?
' T' u% I( {& i
佛学院的出家人,福州、台湾、香港等地的居士,约200名道友都参加了这次放生活动,出; Y/ ]1 r; `4 S, i+ B

* \* T+ q" |3 t( v- _+ w, V家人的红黄僧衣,在家人五彩缤纷的各式服装,在蓝色大海的衬托下,形成了一道道靓丽. e) a' o7 z; \
( a; R% P( |5 P
的风景。

+ X, c2 |2 X/ H% {& Y; k& q
I found myself in the company of young people to carry out large-scale life liberation. Three ships
; d( ~; z. V/ X: j- g8 K
, l3 g% h. I1 n) J% B3 floaded with many sea creatures whose lives were once at grave stake sailed off the coast in an5 z1 E: h% G+ Q8 H9 Q
9 w! D  d1 R# N) Q0 W
impressive formation. The 200 or so participants included local Buddhists from Xiamen, monks+ B' l; }. V2 Q4 z) L% I  M) t6 d
# p5 Y+ H3 ]' W7 J# X8 G/ J
and nuns from nearby monasteries and Buddhist Academies, as well as lay practitioners from
) d6 t+ i5 B' P3 ?8 B8 B0 v- `. T" S4 F. ]2 ^7 w
Fuzhou, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Against the blue sea, the maroon and yellow monastic robes3 z8 e2 q5 k+ f
1 T0 T& O1 x' `0 y! Q7 H3 C" U
and laities’ attire of various colors stood out vividly and brightly. It was quite a beautiful sight to
; C3 l2 Z) d) M7 \
+ c1 `2 ^% A/ ^; o  |. abehold.

4 O0 b! @. p2 o" s. v# P2 R4 d1 }! Smaking my friend, also from Tibet, and me lose our appetites. We have long wished to save the
" U; G& W' R) l: a# x" V" g5 x3 f0 Y! g* P% @4 F  t
poor fish, shrimp, and so forth from meeting their ends at the knife, it is only today that we have
6 Z3 \+ V& [. z' W5 k! k
$ K* f7 O2 h" k6 S/ dcome to fulfill it. Even though the number of lives we are saving is incomparable with that of
' P! z2 H2 }( [0 Z4 \
6 D$ U  D) o, C1 G4 E. {being killed in the whole city, we are still grateful for the opportunity.
/ E% N; t" l: M% ^  R* O& e3 x( s+ K8 z& }
记得曾有一县令名曰潘公,在他上任期间,制定县规命令百姓不得入江湖渔捕,犯者加罪
6 z: n6 t( r* f0 k% K4 x
* B" K5 ~4 D3 \6 r7 e- n。当他后来去任时,水中发出号呼之声,如丧考妣。当地人听到后,莫不叹异。不知道什
# W3 A* Z( g$ O! L" D8 ^/ r
0 S3 V  X6 L- c* {& o5 r3 D" u么时候厦门也能有这样的好县令,也能使这些生灵免受刀俎之苦。不过,此地的放生之风6 Q: T5 ^) K& F" [% J! R9 g

- q. N1 f  ]( Y0 m! H还算比较盛行,听说是一位居士发心印了一万册《放生功德文》,广为结缘,才使此风日* N- P2 F3 i8 `+ r3 F
( P; i) W* r' \
益兴盛,继而流传下来的。
: f+ ]6 v, \  p" U/ \

0 J! R- y" U$ q! P" }, ^4 S6 AThere was once a county magistrate name Poon Gong who forbade his subjects from catching+ u/ c  c9 ]0 B
0 p( u$ h& s7 Y' \- ?: ?) D4 K" X
any live fish by instigating severe punishments for perpetrators. Years later when he was about8 w) _& f% C, H$ E) o7 L/ \5 Q6 T

  d. p# i0 }2 ^8 k+ P0 h) F" Dto leave his official post, a wailing sound as grief-stricken as if one’s parents had been lost was
  V3 M8 ]* S6 z& V) k, K/ ]. c: ]5 k/ u5 A5 ?" `2 v  c
heard from the waters, filling people’s hearts with sadness and amazement. I often wonder
5 @0 I; }9 o/ G) \" m# L+ \2 s4 G" ~! j, O! J9 J" [) o
when such a benevolent county magistrate will appear again in Xiamen such that many beings
2 R3 k, W  I+ A- B- d4 p
$ l9 h) J2 N2 G: X9 n& Ywill be saved from going under the knife. Nonetheless, the practice of lifesaving has been well; [, Q( g3 n7 A( Q# p

8 w1 G/ [1 J+ \+ g* {accepted here, due largely to, I was told, the free distribution of 10,000 booklets of The Merit of
; A1 @6 Y+ F9 J9 K/ e7 [+ [8 B1 K7 F; J. Y
Releasing Live Beings by an aspiring layperson. The tradition thus has gradually flourished and9 E8 D* l8 |9 g5 C" [& U7 e

: f7 O' q# D$ bcome down to this day.3 E, r6 p  f2 E4 @: o6 w! d0 T+ e
0 r: [& b  R3 E/ T4 W( X9 P
据说这是当地近年来规模最大的一次放生。不管规模大小,至少,这也是我们为这些生灵& H3 K4 B- {, M

  v) b0 |! c) b反对压迫而举行的一次抗议。善无大小,唯贵久长,日日增之,月月累之,但愿百年以后( F' |6 q: e3 @7 c# w
6 O! @, S+ F$ X% Z. O
,生灵涂炭的悲剧不会再上演了。

, p+ @1 p9 u8 F% R! DToday’s lifesaving activity reportedly is the largest one in recent years in the area. Regardless of* F6 f$ h& l( {
- q# c  s: J: a9 `; b  v2 p. o# J
whether the magnitude is large or small, at least we have made a revolt against oppression on
" P$ n' e- X/ v* |# z# x7 B2 u' l3 H$ y+ o9 X5 p2 O
behalf of these sea creatures. The value of good deeds depends not so much on their scale but% o3 Z, H1 \! X$ }& W' H1 F  ~* `; j

1 }& u2 U* r+ y$ E9 tmore on their consistency. When virtues are practiced daily and enhanced monthly, we hope: N8 k8 m  i  O6 @

0 U- `* X% ^% c1 \2 @) [: uthat one hundred years from now, the tragedy of taking other beings’ lives will no longer exist.
