) `2 s1 ]" P2 o/ J中遭遇强盗所致。这不但没有影响他的形象,反而使他显得更加可爱。

I took room and board at his house when I was attending elementary school. Every day before

dawn, he would get up and start to do prostrations and at the same time recite prayers. After

8 X+ A( V2 \7 @7 p6 C6 Dthe afternoon and recited scriptures in the evening. For over 10 years he kept the same schedule) k5 D4 H; W& |4 ^9 ]& O

over and over again without interruption.

8 g. b5 a+ k* z: N: L: M当时我以为,作为修行人本来就应当这样,所以不足为奇。如今,当我意识到我和我周围7 Y8 Z. h( R+ e3 D; b

的人大多是三天打鱼,两天晒网,心情好的时候就精进,心情不好的时候就散乱的情形,

7 d7 v% K- I- ^2 ^5 }We get serious only when we are in good spirits but as soon as our mood falls, we become" Z8 z7 X$ W2 h1 Z. l
2 Q1 Z: _! q& O; z# Edistracted and lag behind in practice. The glaring contrast makes his perseverance all the more
4 r" e! D0 ~5 G6 q M% Y S; i P( @' @3 s/ i& V
admirable.
& y% q& R6 t: B+ R! ?! q3 o$ }8 v; M+ W0 S% m0 s7 b
到1987年他去世,已念了五亿多心咒。真是不算不知道,一算吓一跳。和他的精进相比,

实在令我惭愧。
% b' F R9 z0 r4 ?- f/ q5 p; K* [* m% C8 t7 G5 M% P. k
At the time of his passing at age 87, he had accumulated 500 million mantras, an astonishing9 U* ^/ E6 D% \4 C

number that could remain unrecognized without adding it all up. Comparing my meager

0 l" D% N/ j+ u9 h《大乘阿毗达磨论》云:“诸资粮道修行人应精进闻思,诸根调柔,饮食适当,上、下半
9 J2 W/ G7 {$ T$ \, P0 ^4 G% d2 r% M" W. ?, l& v! n
夜不入眠(意为只睡中夜)。”0 ^2 m8 x; M: M" J" a3 N" v
. d# {) Q7 v+ @. {: @" n. r
In Mahayana Abhidharma Sangiti Shastra it says: “Practitioners on the path of accumulation* R# S2 L$ G+ T( q; L
9 {6 ^) D* ]8 ~0 e3 W
should endeavor in studying, contemplating, and meditating on the Dharma; to tame the six0 T; o1 K& T+ d3 H/ j5 R# s
5 h: T2 t2 b8 i/ i6 ?
senses, eat appropriately, and avoid sleeping in the early or late part of the night (that is, to sleep2 f J/ X7 F3 @ ~

only in the middle section of the night).”

“不积跬步,无以至千里;不积小流,无以成江海。”

Without adding up many little steps, a journey of a thousand miles cannot be accomplished.

Without the pouring together of many tiny streams, there will be no big oceans. x8 n V+ E; |" `/ z; o
* \ j; h4 L' r0 d9 `0 Z7 ?) k一时的勤奋不算什么,一生的勤奋才是最重要的。
& A% }9 _7 n' b8 J, A e# z2 Q
5 T& R3 L! K9 t% N9 x5 g$ o _. {An on-and- off diligence amounts to nothing; only the diligence over a lifetime is what counts.
