长久——索达吉堪布
修行是一项旷日持久的艰苦过程。无垢光尊者说:“修行不能仅靠几天的努力,需要长期的
6 g: V/ f: i; l) M  `奋斗。”如果能长期坚持不懈地精勤,既可磨炼意志,又可积攒资粮。4 D, J. v+ W/ I( P5 P
Spiritual practice is a challenging process that takes time and endurance. Longchen Rabjam says: ( \5 ^* D2 S9 h4 }
“Spiritual practice is not a few days’ effort only; it is a long struggle.” By practicing diligently and
, v2 [& E% `$ r( u& p6 f- k' [! \persistently for a long period, not only we can sharpen our willpower but also accumulate vast 6 v; F6 M4 }1 }( M  ]
merit.
1 N  v2 w& @! N' @3 S记得小时候有一位叫扎拉的阿姨,不仅年轻美丽,而且诚信佛法。她曾跟随村里人一起到" d4 p8 r& Q* d% }) }
拉萨朝圣。30年前,她曾在上师前发愿,每天磕头100个,念诵极乐愿文1遍,金刚萨埵心( E, y* k0 n9 t8 F1 j3 x
咒10000遍。当时尚处于宗教受到严重摧毁的恐怖时期,念经诵咒尚可默默完成,但磕头8 d& x9 D9 T" w) W9 n
就有很大困难。除了在家里,她常在放牧时偷偷到一山洞里磕头,并叮嘱我为其放哨。常
- a% ]% n! d' r' A  v常趁没人之时,我就提醒她:“你该磕头了!”
! f& p. [5 a, v- t8 k& w, ^I remember when I was a child, there was a beautiful young aunt called Drala. As a devout
$ C, x, `$ r' dBuddhist, she made a pilgrimage to Lhasa with local villagers and pledged to her teacher that
. ]- v6 B% m5 v1 a2 p. j( severy day, she would perform 100 prostrations, read once the Aspiration Prayer to Be Born in the
  x. Q! f, j" u5 M! F/ ^Pure Land of Great Bliss, and recite 10,000 times the Vajrasattva mantra. That was 30 years ago , ~# x2 |/ U/ E$ v3 d+ [3 b4 ^
when religions were being destroyed ruthlessly. In that horrific period, one might manage to ! A* c" ]) e( d
recite mantras or read sutras silently without getting caught; but prostrations presented a bigger
8 I' W# E- ], E. Q# }problem. Besides doing it at home, she also tried the accumulation in mountain caves when
9 }2 {, R" K$ M" z# xherding, and would always ask me to stand guard for her. When no one was around, I would - [: D) u# E7 I4 F& W) p& j
always remind her: “It’s time for you to do prostrations!”
8 E4 O8 v8 c: b! ~9 @) b. D时光荏苒,30年时光匆匆流逝。其间我经历了读书、出家等一系列变故。去年7月,我在

- ]  O+ ?8 ?' F3 M间更多了,可以念更多的咒子。”“那这么多年您一共磕了多少头?念了多少咒?”“没统计过9 {0 l5 R8 }+ t) s
,我想只要好好修持就行了,没有去统计什么数量。”
* c1 r" J8 [4 n# u- ~' r& dTime elapsed quickly; 30 years had slipped by before I met her in my hometown last July. During
- p( M4 Q4 M* g. c: S& ^this period I had gone through stages of schooling and become a monk. For her, the experience
  z2 F, i- j2 Y$ {7 Uof life’s ups and downs had chiseled her face. Reminiscing about the old days, I quickly asked her: - o7 t2 B$ W+ z, S2 q3 x7 l' n
“Are you still continuing prostrations and recitations?” She answered: “Certainly. I’ve never ! ^+ @1 C- ?& c8 s- `# o
stopped. Even if I missed them during my episodes of severe illness, I always managed to make % s' a2 i- v, i) d- c: d
them up after recovery. Now, with more free time on hand, I can recite even more mantras.” I
  z5 p2 l, n/ N$ j$ Easked, “Then, through all these years, how many prostrations and mantra recitations have you , j9 ^, u* {1 r8 f2 f  i% u
done in total?” She replied, “I have not really kept track of them. I feel practicing alone is good
( P5 _& C; f& x9 n4 N8 Benough and have never cared to count the numbers.”! q1 ~) f1 }) D; k
我在心里为其保守地算了一下。这30年她至少磕头1,095,000个,念诵极乐愿文10950遍,
2 m6 L8 v; b& \8 Y# M) ^" O金刚萨埵心咒109,500,000遍。这对于很多人来说不着啻为天文数字。扎拉是藏族中极其( Y- m" H9 X( j; \. C% v/ }1 U( [" j" E
普通的一位教徒,既没有名声,也不算最精进。但她能30年如一日地以磨杵成针的毅力锲

I made a mental calculation. Conservatively, in the past 30 years, she could have done at least
- V$ u  e3 T; [5 F! |1,095,000 prostrations, read the Aspiration Prayer to Be Born in the Pure Land of Great Bliss * d; \/ E/ W. _: H/ ]+ ]0 D
10,950 times, and recited the Vajrasattva mantra 109,500,000 times. For many people, these 6 l: e  u* }  z, |1 x
figures may seem astronomical. Drala is all but an average practitioner commonly seen among . p5 n3 b0 ?) y) F' u; G  o
Tibetans, little known, nor extraordinarily diligent. Nonetheless, that she has kept her practice ; H- @0 p& O0 z8 t8 s( ^
throughout 30 years with the perseverance of “grinding an iron pestle down to a needle” is truly
9 ^8 d5 c" V$ U- v" `* j* q: [praiseworthy.& Q; Y2 `  R$ h: O3 m3 V/ Q/ W

& K: ?9 k' W+ g- r0 F1 E7 g, o不舍。”- r' z6 j6 s- R, I+ n
These days there are practitioners who can’t wait to flaunt around their completion of one cycle
% N4 g" t1 K/ l) m- Yof 500,000 preliminaries, lest someone would miss their accomplishment. Drala, on the other ! v# |) O4 t2 `% D- B
hand, cares not for recognition but only to practice persistently; she is indeed admirable. $ g' G8 o* J; [. J
Checking my own progress, I had made pledges before my master, but I have not practiced % _, Z& W! A0 [& t3 `
authentically; I have been addressed as a spiritual teacher, but I am no better than common
  R: X# ?/ {- B, P7 d; a1 I0 a- K7 c1 cpeople. Shouldn’t I blush with shame?; u# \: s4 Y, v' m8 l' c2 S
The ancient saying goes:
9 x& }. ^) @5 D* @3 YOne gallop of a noble steed remains one gallop of distance, not 10 gallops.3 e: p7 i2 R8 s
Ten days of effort of pulling a cart by an inferior horse, on the other hand, would cover 10 days’
) M1 s( m; ]+ ?* `+ {4 a' a9 ^distance.
. F# D/ F9 `& Q) I5 LSuccess comes from doing the task persistently.5 E. R# N1 \  X+ z+ L; H" @
如果每个修行人都能有此精神,有一分付出,就一定会有一分收获的。
. `. e% g' o6 M" ?% g! ?, EEvery practitioner should embrace such an enduring spirit. With every ounce of effort put in,
4 ~8 N9 d, B; b; p5 b. \there is bound to be an ounce of reward.
