$ w: z8 r2 D! W& a+ rcannot bear the tiniest setbacks. But in fact, failure is not necessarily without merit. There is this

) v+ J+ ~; a% L5 H! h: _8 BMisfortune, that is where happiness depends;: M& Q' t7 v* m( L Q9 j2 R
Happiness, that is where misfortune underlies.% `, M; V( E0 m {- O x( W* k' m

He wrote in Dreams of 10 Years in Minnan: “I have a rather peculiar mindset these days: I only) {2 X% y& w, ~+ U$ c
wish for failure in the things I do. It is because failure and imperfection can make me feel humble, j) ~5 Z; b3 `6 p
and abashed. Only then will I see my own inadequacies and lack of qualities, and strive to correct
& m& r+ F2 b+ c. ^% Vmyself for the better. Whatever I do, I invariably hope I will fail; failure teaches me humility.
$ M% f D# S# O. E0 f E% eShould I become successful, I might be puffed up with arrogance, which would be disastrous!”) N' z; v. g5 L. J; p
This passage is my favorite to memorize, as the master’s unconventional way of thinking reveals
7 s6 \+ C S1 Y# `his extraordinary realization and modesty.

% t# a2 `& s3 f: K9 OThese teachings are fortunate coincidences with what Master Hong Yi has to say. The prowess of1 \9 O5 c" l! e, u$ w; ]
a truly brave man, after all, lies in his capacity to be unafraid of failure and willingly embrace7 U6 o3 B8 h- l/ V/ Y& f
failure.* o$ l9 ^: K% j6 V# I
关于如何面对失败,世间也积累了不少以辨证的眼光看问题的格言,如 “塞翁失马,焉知) ~4 |: e! I. H- V
非福。”“生于忧患,死于安乐。”而且,有不少的世间人,也懂得迂回的路必有其收获2 w* e! ?' Q' J4 J( r3 W9 b
。作家罗兰曾说过:“在人生途中,你每走一步,就必定会得一步的经验。不管这一步是
, s# w) i8 E6 p" t" B `7 h对还是错,‘对’有对的收获,‘错’有错的教训。绕远路,走错路的结果,你就恰如迷2 H. ~8 S x/ b9 a
路走入深山,别人为你的危险焦急惋惜之际,你却采集了一些珍奇的花果,获得了一些罕: b2 ]2 \, V @/ a" c" W9 T7 y+ g8 f
见的鸟兽。而且你多认了一段路,多锻炼出一分坚强与胆量。”
! B" D2 f, C* v9 fThere are many proverbs in the world on how to face failure squarely. Many are the fruition of
. p( @% h, G+ {; evalid analyses, such as: “When the old man lost his mare, who could have guessed it was a) v% C; J- z0 Y [8 k9 q" ]( I
blessing in disguise? A loss may well turn out to be a gain,” and, “In adversity, we thrive; in
8 M7 I, J! x m; o `comfort, we perish.” Many people also appreciate that a convoluted path is bound to provide
" _: A" \$ j% Z+ g5 x" Osome kind of reward. Writer Ruo Lan once said: “In life, every step we take brings the experience
/ \" i# F+ Y5 C" l, F+ [of that one step. This has nothing to do with whether the step is right or wrong. The ‘right’ one/ Q- C; R4 }3 I$ g7 B
yields the right reward. The ‘wrong’ one presents lessons from being wrong. Taking the longer5 J5 Q, G( b; {; i& G7 Y
route or walking on the wrong path is just like being lost in the deep mountains. While people5 h% S8 b# }% v# b
are worrying and bemoaning your safety, you hit the opportunity to collect rare flowers and
. X0 O1 B/ F: z( f+ z9 ]7 }9 {( nberries, and you spot exceptional birds and animals. In addition, having to cover the extra2 X9 v: b. z; X/ {' d" O
distance, you have cultivated extra courage and tenacity.”) ?/ w2 f$ O" u1 S0 j2 I3 u
若能勇敢地面对失败,则将尝到其中的甘甜滋味。& a5 t& C/ K) h: I
If we face failure bravely, we shall come to enjoy its sweet taste.
