钱财 | On Money

城市里的人们,脸上都挂着疲倦和痛苦的表情。究竟为什么会这样呢?经过我的详细观察
, \' Q% v/ E0 u4 P0 U/ C, B& ]5 a: m
4 C5 l- F5 @! s/ q4 z,发现大多是因为钱财。
% g9 a0 _! u6 d6 n

0 y+ o$ R% N7 oCity dwellers usually wear a look of weariness and worry. Why is that so? After my careful
5 n9 ~% z8 |' o, Z  I
$ i# I/ D7 X5 a0 ?# Dobservation, I find money issues are largely to blame.5 P( X- Y: F- I" [% z% U+ D

) V+ c* ?$ I0 V) k. W众生赖以生存的这付臭皮囊,如果不幸降临于都市,就时刻需要钱财的支撑,否则就会轰
) k. k, |: Q: b1 i, k1 Q( Q$ y' K/ ^% x. W0 E$ M4 z; ^& ~
然坍塌。也许有的人会说:“不可能吧?”但在都市里,你会处处感觉到钱财的重要性。
; n4 j# o& ?% r
  \- d7 F# U5 h无论吃饭、穿衣、看病、睡觉,甚至上厕所,也离不开钱。真的应了那句话:“钱不是万
" V, }. N& Z/ k' F$ y3 v
0 U8 n% q+ Q1 Y" L& \4 F能的,但没有钱是万万不能的。”

' x* T  B3 x2 R0 V) R$ }" y, R
- B* N8 e  {2 `8 z" OThis sack of flesh and bones that we humans survive in, if it fatefully lands in a city, will need the2 ]% T9 k; O9 p
) C/ Z/ H5 ?( a2 j  U
constant support of money. Otherwise, it will fall with a thump. Some of you may argue: “That’s
( ?9 b& N( ?* k: P
6 J# G2 G3 {1 B1 q, V, k( h7 _- {) ]8 vnot quite possible!” But in the city, one is forced to be keenly aware of the power of money. Any3 |) y1 f0 B) l. I
  b' O+ [0 P2 }& B# K& w: Q
activity—be it eating, buying clothes, and seeing the doctor, sleeping, even going to the( {  V1 c5 m5 h% |! }1 d

7 T( B/ t3 o- s- t. @toilet—calls for money. It is exactly how the saying goes: “Money is not almighty, but without+ j$ A% n6 V2 e8 m3 R
5 z2 L( [6 M* }/ D" x5 A- F; D
money nothing can be done.”
! `3 V! h/ M: W
; H. \6 C/ O$ X: r/ f没有钱,都市人的一切生存活动都不得不停滞。为了五蕴所构建的这部机器能正常运转,
. O6 j, v* }' P5 u& f5 b
- R# c% T" b: U7 g# j/ p3 M人不得不像奴仆一样,为这部机器的能源——钱财而搏斗。我时常在想,如果人能像蚯蚓! v" n6 J  w0 u- h; B( k3 Q+ w$ h

; U% M5 L9 Y" {* f) p一样吃土也能生存该多好啊!但现实无情地告诉我,城市人要寻求生存的因是异常困难的1 ]% _% r- u  y& \* D6 b

- o1 I0 b0 G( [' u" b7 S! [

; }6 v4 Y$ ?$ D' c3 B) Y
8 d' c* ~/ I3 IWith no money, all living activities in the city have to come to a halt. In order to have our body
* k5 x) C. ]8 i6 g- v- g
9 w" f7 F( m( k5 _: Pmachine, the composite of five aggregates, function normally; humans have to struggle like
- ?2 C- C" }/ }3 {* Y7 s$ n* K
4 W# M, m) `9 E8 h3 [slaves to garner the source of its fuel—money. I often think, wouldn’t it be wonderful if humans7 P& Z/ Y: F: k
( U7 U5 K, q$ z8 V4 f: w
could survive just by imbibing soil like the earthworm! But cruel reality tells me otherwise: for& J7 n5 E8 |6 b, B2 F2 z* g
$ V3 R) C* X! b  o
people living in the city, the provisions to survive are by no means easy to come by.
, p( O. Z/ l/ v- S! k3 j
  k: H  M9 |* d* g& F- G所以,城市的人只有忙忙碌碌。不论他是谁,都会感受为钱财奔波而带来的痛苦。以前以1 }  [& g& S$ v+ d6 g

# ^$ H; x: N# y- a0 T  ^为城市人过着天人一般的日子,现在方知,他们更是备受煎熬啊!这一切,令我想起山里
9 v( O: h' x3 G: z! M0 N: V7 a2 r, @0 r
的修行人。在山里,除了食物,不需要为更多的事操心,生存的因自然具足。同样是1000+ e: y) E+ G/ R+ I9 s% ^. T+ e0 E

$ c/ ^6 m7 a& z4 w, {元,在山里,就是腰板挺直的大富翁;然而在城市里,却有捉襟见肘、相形见绌的感觉。
3 v3 C! _) q% f: X- n; u: j2 p
" K  f4 w) h* I$ Q4 S7 C0 {$ ~
Consequently, city folks are reduced to being always on the run. The anguish of having to work
9 g+ U7 i2 B& z- r5 t2 }
) Z/ R- v& B( T% _- p* t2 Ahard for money is felt by practically everyone. Previously I had the illusion that people in the city
4 d2 \% {% p) s0 d# N' Q0 }2 N, q% R% a) e+ F1 N  ?+ S' S' ?
live like celestial beings; only now do I come to see the extra agony they have to endure. This4 P* L9 U) h( [' d! b

) X1 x1 Y# ?# T, i/ Greminds me of those spiritual seekers deep in the mountains where the environment is naturally
  W* ^: N, e/ ^. r  x
  u1 C& x  q  s4 M' v. u, uconducive to survival. Other than food, there are not too many things to worry about, and a
4 \# t* P6 w- I* H* ?; H2 b
% I' q4 c( t3 g1 }- C" i- ]person with 1,000 yuan can stand tall and be considered a rich person. While in the city, the1 H. G3 O! N' s
3 M/ j/ k- K& D% L
same amount of money won’t go too far; one is unable to make ends meet and will feel a sense7 |5 f6 @( x. {; X1 ?

- W$ j. X, |0 L9 A# Yof inferiority.7 }0 O, l: r9 E+ m& a: A
' g# s: S  J7 E" J  f( a& Y# }* ^, a& a
作为修行人,就是应当以积累圣者七财为荣,积累世间钱财为耻,视清贫为最好的伴侣。3 Z; Q- m5 G, [: @* I# M9 ^$ K
) ^+ V# g& J4 q( i
噶当派大德们最推崇的教言就是:
0 t$ d; Q. t1 o

# \" q: w& w- ^; FA spiritual seeker should be defined as one who is proud of accruing the seven noble riches, who( d$ U$ V' m( h8 o, I, k& w$ w
. b/ k5 U, O; z3 j# |8 v" Z  H
is ashamed of amassing worldly possessions, and who regards poverty as a dear companion. The
) r! c% `9 s6 O) e2 V; F3 f4 A9 ]5 D" ~' w3 U$ L& y
most celebrated teaching among the Kadampa masters is:* N8 q' [( z6 D0 y: W2 U1 N% V

* b8 {2 j2 J, X“心依于法,法依于贫,贫依于死,死依于壑。”

* ]; b/ E% ~+ F; N# _& y$ n, I. i
+ D' [8 S- B2 x- S, HBase your mind on the Dharma,- w( e# U; W# j4 Y: [6 H: ^: B0 ~, A
% T2 k9 w. ^+ K0 ~8 o. F$ r" i& W
Base your Dharma on a humble life,
: Q! X6 v/ q+ L7 @4 q" C2 G) T
" N- A' }% c1 l) ^Base your humble life on the thought of death,
, W/ \( S  }/ l0 V7 z7 ~8 o* I: d* U8 m8 r) ^, B
Base your death on a lonely cave.
) ]" u$ ]5 \: }9 {4 f% {+ k+ F9 ]$ R$ G/ v9 N* [
富贵荣华足以使人痴迷,而贫贱却足以使人睿智。
; ~+ l# Z4 R! n- V

* P( ?3 o! Z; v2 Y) E3 U7 tWealth and power make one obsessive and indulgent, while poverty and humility impart to one; B4 y! N+ o6 F5 U* r" d9 ^$ B) i

- Q7 ~& {4 L" l/ R/ G; N; Kvision and wisdom.7 m' F  s  O/ d/ h. N

. L+ r9 K1 i; u' |+ b9 L汉地也有“一等和尚轻飘飘,二等和尚一大包,三等和尚压弯了腰”的说法

6 u, s. C/ Y' l+ q. s+ TThere is also a saying in the Han area: “The monk of the highest caliber is light and at ease, the
3 T/ j0 v  ~9 E. Y4 C9 K% b1 c/ N( p$ `, R
monk of the second rank holds a big sack, the monk of the third rank stoops with weight.”- S. H7 P1 X2 }+ E  X: X
5 N! s7 [' F* m6 W+ y
一位藏地的大德,在英国作学者期间,每月发工资前,就将上月的节余全部布施,自己却
* F3 k. o6 o. m' M) N) ~* h; m& K# |$ [6 A; s
穿着破旧的衣衫。很多慕名而去拜见他的人,都难以将眼前这个外表寒碜的人,与修证圆
$ T0 ^; s9 C1 g% l, |+ [; ^# d4 h. J; X6 z
满、学富五车的藏地著名大成就者的名称联系在一起。这种行为,实在令人赞叹。

7 c1 R, K, [. m0 l- U0 Y' L7 u5 w7 [' m! H* Q- x
Some time ago, an erudite Tibetan went to England as a visiting scholar. Each month before
' c% ~! L9 a% o' e2 v9 ^  n
# `* `/ f6 d' H, apayday, he would offer all the money he saved from the previous month to charity, keeping for  z- S& Z, s/ Q

- J" ?+ ]2 h1 q5 p4 K( v$ Thimself only old ragged clothes. When visitors sought him out with admiration, they found it- M5 B& _0 [3 L" v1 y9 }  _8 A

( t8 B/ X2 N4 K+ z+ @; y7 zhard to match the humble, scrubby person they saw with the famous Tibetan siddha of perfect
# ]7 T8 d: ^! I& E. }+ N0 J
; [, G* ~) a( }' [learning and accomplishment. His conduct deserves our highest praise.
! n9 y- i2 B; q8 b! {7 O7 |& Q& h' W0 n1 [' \. `8 k
无数的大德们都为我们做出了表率,我们实应心无旁骛地依止于贫穷。! Y/ K2 x! m% e- Q3 T! E, D

) g% y. N( @+ |( `Innumerable sages have shown us perfect examples; we should abide in poverty without the
2 Z/ D$ R, v2 Q- Y6 ]; l  h, e- e4 h' [
slightest second thought.0 P$ C* N0 U% o1 k% W5 s
