Spiritual practice is a challenging process that takes time and endurance. Longchen Rabjam says:

1 \ r! j# f- l- j, f6 I9 ^persistently for a long period, not only we can sharpen our willpower but also accumulate vast 8 B& d6 r4 a4 z* M, n T
merit.( S0 v, C$ W$ i5 s
记得小时候有一位叫扎拉的阿姨,不仅年轻美丽,而且诚信佛法。她曾跟随村里人一起到
* n" [5 m: x2 X3 V3 g# C1 W拉萨朝圣。30年前,她曾在上师前发愿,每天磕头100个,念诵极乐愿文1遍,金刚萨埵心& M1 h3 f' b2 c8 n
咒10000遍。当时尚处于宗教受到严重摧毁的恐怖时期,念经诵咒尚可默默完成,但磕头1 C Y. d, V$ |8 _" G& v, ^
就有很大困难。除了在家里,她常在放牧时偷偷到一山洞里磕头,并叮嘱我为其放哨。常# K' ]6 x! u0 i: G. F
常趁没人之时,我就提醒她:“你该磕头了!”
) s. z" p, T1 e# ~I remember when I was a child, there was a beautiful young aunt called Drala. As a devout
* B. K9 |0 C0 l/ j: H) ?- T' \Buddhist, she made a pilgrimage to Lhasa with local villagers and pledged to her teacher that
- ]; g- ]0 f2 \every day, she would perform 100 prostrations, read once the Aspiration Prayer to Be Born in the 0 ^# W9 V( A. ]$ h$ u. J
Pure Land of Great Bliss, and recite 10,000 times the Vajrasattva mantra. That was 30 years ago ' @& T2 L, x' u e
when religions were being destroyed ruthlessly. In that horrific period, one might manage to
$ a; V& U% Y; `) W( \, Brecite mantras or read sutras silently without getting caught; but prostrations presented a bigger
/ d: w$ _" N4 l; n" u9 Uproblem. Besides doing it at home, she also tried the accumulation in mountain caves when
8 ?! ~4 d P @herding, and would always ask me to stand guard for her. When no one was around, I would
4 X+ E& `* q; Walways remind her: “It’s time for you to do prostrations!”

# z% ~# {+ ]4 Q# Z2 h间更多了,可以念更多的咒子。”“那这么多年您一共磕了多少头?念了多少咒?”“没统计过
& k" d9 l1 O% u,我想只要好好修持就行了,没有去统计什么数量。”9 [' S, T: ?3 w9 h7 Z% M
Time elapsed quickly; 30 years had slipped by before I met her in my hometown last July. During
0 ^+ g* u5 I' x4 t- zthis period I had gone through stages of schooling and become a monk. For her, the experience
! `8 w! l% |7 x: b, tof life’s ups and downs had chiseled her face. Reminiscing about the old days, I quickly asked her: ( B' F/ w6 } T2 W8 r" I5 ~- Z
“Are you still continuing prostrations and recitations?” She answered: “Certainly. I’ve never
9 F9 P1 k$ n4 A$ u+ Mstopped. Even if I missed them during my episodes of severe illness, I always managed to make 0 a: ^9 D: Z3 H' J# u6 `) B
them up after recovery. Now, with more free time on hand, I can recite even more mantras.” I 1 ?( S$ D9 R0 Y6 W: ^
asked, “Then, through all these years, how many prostrations and mantra recitations have you
) Z1 J7 e$ Z9 Q# G. [/ ?2 Rdone in total?” She replied, “I have not really kept track of them. I feel practicing alone is good , i" O% B5 Q# ~" f8 t. g3 y" Z& v' M' A
enough and have never cared to count the numbers.”2 i. N2 X ?( r7 _3 ?* Y+ E
我在心里为其保守地算了一下。这30年她至少磕头1,095,000个,念诵极乐愿文10950遍,3 a4 n/ ?! l9 @. L$ A4 M" b1 ^
金刚萨埵心咒109,500,000遍。这对于很多人来说不着啻为天文数字。扎拉是藏族中极其5 q% a& l& e# D4 v0 c1 ~
普通的一位教徒,既没有名声,也不算最精进。但她能30年如一日地以磨杵成针的毅力锲

I made a mental calculation. Conservatively, in the past 30 years, she could have done at least

# \0 e( S! u) }; ?10,950 times, and recited the Vajrasattva mantra 109,500,000 times. For many people, these
# l: E/ {( I4 p, Ofigures may seem astronomical. Drala is all but an average practitioner commonly seen among
; J+ T% l) U5 z# @& f5 mTibetans, little known, nor extraordinarily diligent. Nonetheless, that she has kept her practice
9 g: S% m) }' ~& O( h2 Dthroughout 30 years with the perseverance of “grinding an iron pestle down to a needle” is truly # h* s9 x8 I' }# L$ h
praiseworthy.
+ D5 q# w7 z/ E0 V. s/ w' a8 R现在有的人修完一遍50万加行,就四处炫耀,唯恐他人不知。扎拉却能默默无闻,从不间5 \3 Y7 J+ Y# N
断,的确令人叹服。反观自己,虽然在上师前发了愿,却没有如法行持,虽然被别人称为2 z6 x* p# @7 w9 m) c9 i5 p/ y
法师,却不如一个普通人,真令我汗颜。古人云:“骐骥一跃,不能千里;驽马十驾,功在/ m* L3 u) T' `# X% Z3 @
不舍。”

, u( f( V$ J2 c$ M& K7 K( Rof 500,000 preliminaries, lest someone would miss their accomplishment. Drala, on the other ! O& d# N" q7 R( I
hand, cares not for recognition but only to practice persistently; she is indeed admirable.
8 n5 t( B! G+ k- w: L7 ]' i+ XChecking my own progress, I had made pledges before my master, but I have not practiced
+ t2 p( k5 f- ^/ Vauthentically; I have been addressed as a spiritual teacher, but I am no better than common ; Y* {0 h8 a5 ~' l8 f- b
people. Shouldn’t I blush with shame?; b8 k* i+ @; @8 L* l
The ancient saying goes:
; T* c) |* Y* l& A6 D) o2 C; K& lOne gallop of a noble steed remains one gallop of distance, not 10 gallops.; G$ y) N4 e7 b! c; \/ Q* b
Ten days of effort of pulling a cart by an inferior horse, on the other hand, would cover 10 days’ 3 e& [' ]7 p* q. z+ z( ]8 b
distance.
- S! z- n/ F; }4 rSuccess comes from doing the task persistently.

Every practitioner should embrace such an enduring spirit. With every ounce of effort put in,
