失败 | On Failure 世间的人,不管是市井白丁还是朝廷命官,人人都希望为一己之利而拼搏。凡事务求一帆9 @0 D% e$ S" ^: n& P5 e
风顺,经不起半点挫折。其实,失败也未必一无是处。有一句古训说得好:“祸兮福所倚7 i6 G, y; r' D5 c
,福兮祸所伏”。
2 j! ~/ Q3 g) L/ [. yPeople in the world, be they illiterate hillbillies or government luminaries, all eagerly strive to1 Q t {# y- Z. J. k3 ]
fulfill their own interests. When doing anything, they want nothing but smooth sailing and& Y5 f) K! @: n2 H4 `9 L! u
cannot bear the tiniest setbacks. But in fact, failure is not necessarily without merit. There is this
/ ]7 N+ G3 u, d z h! k2 w5 z5 Zadage: B7 h" X# Q9 F# k" f4 h
Misfortune, that is where happiness depends;3 j& L' x' j5 s6 ^1 \* g
Happiness, that is where misfortune underlies.

7 d) t# a/ K( L& Otime. After he chose to be ordained as a monk, he studied unremittingly Buddha’s teachings and
6 Y4 j; [ t6 }/ k5 D% H. Mabided the sparing fare of no food after midday. He dedicated himself particularly to Vinaya( ?$ J3 _5 v( z
pitaka and is revered as the 11th lineage holder of the Vinaya School. He has left a rich spiritual( c% i4 D+ o1 [) Y
legacy for future generations; in China, he stood out as a model figure whose life underwent a9 q; L! b/ S3 h+ D' J4 X
transformation from utter glory to utmost humbleness.1 }) D8 ?* A* ^. j) l! r" K
他在《闽南十年之梦影》中说道:“我的心情是很特别的,我只希望我的事情失败。因为1 h4 f+ s- n7 a! @
事情失败和不完满,这才使我发大惭愧,能够晓得自己的德行欠缺,自己的修养不足。那
7 E' l: C& v: B5 ]1 r; O我才可努力用功,努力改过迁善。无论什么事情,总希望它失败。失败才会发大惭愧。倘
2 o( C0 w; A4 w若因成功而得意,那就不得了啦。”我特别喜欢背诵这段文字,这种有悖常人的思维,正- M4 B) u# i$ r7 g5 S; P
说明了法师的谦逊与大智大悟。+ B" M' K, _1 f/ g* k" B
He wrote in Dreams of 10 Years in Minnan: “I have a rather peculiar mindset these days: I only
; \" W) h% S$ C3 ]* A4 zwish for failure in the things I do. It is because failure and imperfection can make me feel humble2 M+ ~. \1 q6 N- |
and abashed. Only then will I see my own inadequacies and lack of qualities, and strive to correct4 W2 A8 B8 x/ d2 w) b
myself for the better. Whatever I do, I invariably hope I will fail; failure teaches me humility.
1 U7 c& f+ F4 r+ w$ IShould I become successful, I might be puffed up with arrogance, which would be disastrous!”
: e/ z5 {' Y8 b7 A- O! UThis passage is my favorite to memorize, as the master’s unconventional way of thinking reveals# w$ |% l! L# v
his extraordinary realization and modesty.
( k @4 ^" l: {6 F# |/ i无垢光尊者在《窍诀宝藏论》中的最深要诀之一即是:“灭除我执恒自取失败。”朗日塘
& J0 I7 ?% }1 O3 S$ H3 A巴尊者也有“亏损失败我取受,胜利利益奉献他”的遗训,与弘一法师的话相比,实有异
! u# n1 p6 u9 Y' ]5 F曲同工之妙。不怕失败,敢于失败,真为大丈夫之胆识。* X! ^) C1 p) |2 P; L
One of the most profound teachings of the Omniscient Longchenpa in The Precious Treasury of* V4 t0 q( @3 ^2 K) P
Pith Instructions is: “One must cut off self-clinging and choose failure always.” Langri Tangpa also

May I take upon myself the defeat
3 B( e' O; X- K" @, k/ O; rAnd offer to others the victory.8 v5 B7 Q x4 H
These teachings are fortunate coincidences with what Master Hong Yi has to say. The prowess of
" Z% C H5 O+ }% m( j8 m! }7 S' Wa truly brave man, after all, lies in his capacity to be unafraid of failure and willingly embrace
3 d9 d& j# ~1 {& |0 ]/ f& A kfailure.
4 ?8 k4 ^3 ^2 z. Z' y关于如何面对失败,世间也积累了不少以辨证的眼光看问题的格言,如 “塞翁失马,焉知7 G' A1 O4 y) Z
非福。”“生于忧患,死于安乐。”而且,有不少的世间人,也懂得迂回的路必有其收获
; p& I6 W" Y9 U) j0 O。作家罗兰曾说过:“在人生途中,你每走一步,就必定会得一步的经验。不管这一步是" n" {* N! `+ M7 I( L
对还是错,‘对’有对的收获,‘错’有错的教训。绕远路,走错路的结果,你就恰如迷) p; f, e" a' n8 C ]
路走入深山,别人为你的危险焦急惋惜之际,你却采集了一些珍奇的花果,获得了一些罕
. E6 K. Q8 q5 U见的鸟兽。而且你多认了一段路,多锻炼出一分坚强与胆量。”
3 {: Q% d- @, g0 w* T* ?3 HThere are many proverbs in the world on how to face failure squarely. Many are the fruition of
: d3 o2 D, ?5 t5 L: N- qvalid analyses, such as: “When the old man lost his mare, who could have guessed it was a/ d: t4 n! {/ I; P E8 B @* I
blessing in disguise? A loss may well turn out to be a gain,” and, “In adversity, we thrive; in5 K! k! I/ M( U1 Z3 A& c. m d
comfort, we perish.” Many people also appreciate that a convoluted path is bound to provide
, Q3 r. _8 d% J: g6 A2 @! y: gsome kind of reward. Writer Ruo Lan once said: “In life, every step we take brings the experience; }7 X) d `. @6 D9 v$ p* @3 i
of that one step. This has nothing to do with whether the step is right or wrong. The ‘right’ one
7 S9 M9 d( I& Jyields the right reward. The ‘wrong’ one presents lessons from being wrong. Taking the longer
7 I5 J. q" |; E/ w/ @route or walking on the wrong path is just like being lost in the deep mountains. While people
; O$ f6 F$ b% kare worrying and bemoaning your safety, you hit the opportunity to collect rare flowers and) t' Z& I, B' x2 q
berries, and you spot exceptional birds and animals. In addition, having to cover the extra
) n, f; L2 ~) d6 l: K- T+ t2 v! D, gdistance, you have cultivated extra courage and tenacity.”( i" _/ ^& t6 v
若能勇敢地面对失败,则将尝到其中的甘甜滋味。" Z( q# v5 ^1 v0 `1 y: d* T
If we face failure bravely, we shall come to enjoy its sweet taste.
