迁,青年们早已不必再为反封建、反压迫而战,他们以各种形式庆祝着这一节日。7 O* S9 F" H" V e. Z$ e; V2 E
6 g( X: P+ _- Q6 `, ]Today is Youth Day; it was more than a hundred years ago when the May 4th Movement shook
& w5 o1 {; W% n/ Z( r* ~9 M& Z+ O# a2 }1 | @, R, D3 H
the nation in 1919. As time goes by, however, young people these days no longer emphasize
* \0 d% `0 H* e) `6 A9 T$ o" v: e
fighting feudalism or oppression as their earlier peers did. Instead, they choose to celebrate their
9 `- l( c' U: S/ J+ O- a |' m6 r6 B7 O- Y0 n. X3 G
day in various ways.

8 o. \" V1 }8 L- w, n我也加入了一帮有很多青年人组成的行列,举行了一次大规模的放生活动。三艘船承载着/ F4 x/ D9 E0 r8 J7 J
' p+ A2 b. N U" t" O饱受死亡恐惧的海底居民,浩浩荡荡地驶往深海,除了厦门本地的信众,来自各地寺院、

佛学院的出家人,福州、台湾、香港等地的居士,约200名道友都参加了这次放生活动,出$ v9 \1 X# c- J+ _) y( K% ?( c

家人的红黄僧衣,在家人五彩缤纷的各式服装,在蓝色大海的衬托下,形成了一道道靓丽

的风景。

I found myself in the company of young people to carry out large-scale life liberation. Three ships

% [8 s4 @, J' A. c$ jloaded with many sea creatures whose lives were once at grave stake sailed off the coast in an
7 C8 m, Y5 w; a7 Q" n8 f: X; c- [. K+ l* t/ s# o
impressive formation. The 200 or so participants included local Buddhists from Xiamen, monks
! v% a( O4 o: m4 {1 ^- l5 @6 ]* }- L+ L) s/ I* B/ X! k
and nuns from nearby monasteries and Buddhist Academies, as well as lay practitioners from+ U, Y" F0 v) b; c7 f E' p! t
a9 z3 E0 [" s* Q1 \. p- \, IFuzhou, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Against the blue sea, the maroon and yellow monastic robes
; h9 W2 |, C, P+ E. ]
& A) ^8 j2 f7 |' U$ t; V2 f8 cand laities’ attire of various colors stood out vividly and brightly. It was quite a beautiful sight to* K( ]* ~0 ~" i0 h$ ?3 [

2 `8 ?4 X, L& p* b2 O& y. Gpoor fish, shrimp, and so forth from meeting their ends at the knife, it is only today that we have# d, F% L2 N( D0 B% O5 o

come to fulfill it. Even though the number of lives we are saving is incomparable with that of
, L6 _4 }. _2 ?3 W
# I2 S# c: b. V, _& }) n( }being killed in the whole city, we are still grateful for the opportunity.

+ [7 l2 i/ {4 ~& `还算比较盛行,听说是一位居士发心印了一万册《放生功德文》,广为结缘,才使此风日

益兴盛,继而流传下来的。4 b& j$ b1 R0 g& W3 g5 T6 I$ O5 G

to leave his official post, a wailing sound as grief-stricken as if one’s parents had been lost was

heard from the waters, filling people’s hearts with sadness and amazement. I often wonder% }8 a% k( }+ e) K, O

when such a benevolent county magistrate will appear again in Xiamen such that many beings# |7 ]9 R) E( ~: P) T6 N! E
2 S" ?) L6 f4 y" x2 vwill be saved from going under the knife. Nonetheless, the practice of lifesaving has been well5 d3 r! V2 X& c, L" |

accepted here, due largely to, I was told, the free distribution of 10,000 booklets of The Merit of7 A% j; }( l$ R$ j: k2 H( X4 f

Releasing Live Beings by an aspiring layperson. The tradition thus has gradually flourished and4 u" E' ?5 V+ e) A

Today’s lifesaving activity reportedly is the largest one in recent years in the area. Regardless of

whether the magnitude is large or small, at least we have made a revolt against oppression on

4 y0 r/ S. t$ C) i3 }4 tbehalf of these sea creatures. The value of good deeds depends not so much on their scale but( e9 \, N2 K/ @
. s1 J; {. q% q# A- L z/ H2 |- G- fmore on their consistency. When virtues are practiced daily and enhanced monthly, we hope8 X: @# N* V7 x

that one hundred years from now, the tragedy of taking other beings’ lives will no longer exist.
