I took room and board at his house when I was attending elementary school. Every day before" _# c( K4 Q" h! q) E# a) o) m4 z) L

dawn, he would get up and start to do prostrations and at the same time recite prayers. After
9 w9 D$ u! c4 n$ ^8 v. |7 o% l- ^
breakfast, he would read books and go over his daily Dharma practices. He sat in meditation in
. T. i4 B7 V7 A$ C8 f& u6 V8 E5 s I7 v( Y! [; H9 h# L
the afternoon and recited scriptures in the evening. For over 10 years he kept the same schedule
' H8 ?! e* s4 v: M1 A" M% A+ l+ _; c+ o1 C2 d$ X6 d- g
over and over again without interruption.

当时我以为,作为修行人本来就应当这样,所以不足为奇。如今,当我意识到我和我周围& L7 ]0 }$ o/ U/ R. J8 J
5 v. U( S$ Z4 t' N9 V- @的人大多是三天打鱼,两天晒网,心情好的时候就精进,心情不好的时候就散乱的情形,

At that time I took it for granted that all practitioners should behave as he did, and felt nothing

$ z7 y" `: c5 X7 X9 Uspecial about him. But now I see myself and others only doing spiritual practices in fits and starts.( ~( C ^+ w1 e4 G
5 @0 v N1 [8 X( J; G; m: n
We get serious only when we are in good spirits but as soon as our mood falls, we become5 A+ |& L( f6 C& i8 n5 o
1 }! V/ U6 h. w; g* _/ I X! S' Edistracted and lag behind in practice. The glaring contrast makes his perseverance all the more% t# P1 r# B8 T% ~! _; S
. o- i! p+ t, g0 sadmirable.
& @) U& G2 W P* X2 f$ l9 P, D" ]% L, l- n
到1987年他去世,已念了五亿多心咒。真是不算不知道,一算吓一跳。和他的精进相比,( u' k# ?3 {# j1 }; I8 e
/ D2 p0 l5 l8 V/ s" K6 ~/ C: x) g实在令我惭愧。- h; \+ }& i# T4 u5 N6 T0 k

At the time of his passing at age 87, he had accumulated 500 million mantras, an astonishing
. ?7 I; ~! o, d. w4 w! m' q1 K" \4 C* c T
number that could remain unrecognized without adding it all up. Comparing my meager
& o" P E' X( i2 { Y0 G e6 }4 @) b# p, r
diligence with his, I really feel ashamed.
+ i+ {% |. ?. u$ {% ?; r" v
" f+ t8 g0 D: N/ Q《大乘阿毗达磨论》云:“诸资粮道修行人应精进闻思,诸根调柔,饮食适当,上、下半: I- A/ V/ } ~; \
5 g* k. `3 N* u; _8 \& M0 y
夜不入眠(意为只睡中夜)。”
: s* l0 V( P% j4 w8 J, w9 O- T& J) n$ O6 |9 p/ C
In Mahayana Abhidharma Sangiti Shastra it says: “Practitioners on the path of accumulation

8 X! K {$ E" N, \' Q7 B, Cshould endeavor in studying, contemplating, and meditating on the Dharma; to tame the six' e* |# i/ a/ ~* ]

senses, eat appropriately, and avoid sleeping in the early or late part of the night (that is, to sleep
+ h# e6 n5 p) h* M
. n0 r6 q( t4 l9 g. F7 `only in the middle section of the night).”

0 Q }7 t# x' D( c( T“不积跬步,无以至千里;不积小流,无以成江海。”

; o: H7 [; d5 C" |; _$ Y1 n6 oWithout adding up many little steps, a journey of a thousand miles cannot be accomplished.- l) q( R- T' v' g* x

一时的勤奋不算什么,一生的勤奋才是最重要的。

An on-and- off diligence amounts to nothing; only the diligence over a lifetime is what counts.
