I took room and board at his house when I was attending elementary school. Every day before

dawn, he would get up and start to do prostrations and at the same time recite prayers. After( [! Q8 Z+ ?1 O0 G) Q. s& e

breakfast, he would read books and go over his daily Dharma practices. He sat in meditation in& g; [$ L$ }. E! x3 E
6 r! }; I; t3 g+ [& _the afternoon and recited scriptures in the evening. For over 10 years he kept the same schedule

over and over again without interruption.+ w' k$ T$ k6 G) `

才知道他的毅力的确值得赞叹。

9 R! D) f5 c/ K; i& EAt that time I took it for granted that all practitioners should behave as he did, and felt nothing

special about him. But now I see myself and others only doing spiritual practices in fits and starts.. s5 g' d N5 g3 t) d
z) f6 m: q& E! V6 `- w1 V8 `0 z# d n
We get serious only when we are in good spirits but as soon as our mood falls, we become, h- d+ O7 d" a( w% Q# X/ I
% ^8 e$ A, C9 Q2 U* y
distracted and lag behind in practice. The glaring contrast makes his perseverance all the more& H; v9 B# P* W
+ `. N3 J4 b5 N$ B4 A9 i9 Q( u
admirable.8 s7 E& t) @* u2 Q
0 d. d( y9 E* D6 S, z
到1987年他去世,已念了五亿多心咒。真是不算不知道,一算吓一跳。和他的精进相比,$ S+ _; }' C; e* X- B/ C
$ J N" J6 P0 `! w& M
实在令我惭愧。6 P/ S! q) H4 w9 Q3 u

At the time of his passing at age 87, he had accumulated 500 million mantras, an astonishing1 N* X) y5 m5 u* w5 Y* A
; w. p3 E1 h% X" ~4 q( {number that could remain unrecognized without adding it all up. Comparing my meager

6 N7 @" m0 u' ^. ddiligence with his, I really feel ashamed.

《大乘阿毗达磨论》云:“诸资粮道修行人应精进闻思,诸根调柔,饮食适当,上、下半& d' m+ `( u; @5 u: S2 @

夜不入眠(意为只睡中夜)。” A( O* `7 _1 R# k6 `/ q- H4 V

; ^* P( V4 l$ k O# Y“不积跬步,无以至千里;不积小流,无以成江海。”

Without adding up many little steps, a journey of a thousand miles cannot be accomplished.6 h. h" p# h3 _% D3 [

. y4 c( O5 @) [& f( S# I一时的勤奋不算什么,一生的勤奋才是最重要的。
