Sublime beings who are worthy of their names never seek fame, wealth, or other worldly , u( p; G5 y- O8 w# o
enjoyment on their spiritual path. Instead, they always practice what they preach in order to cut 1 e3 ^. z; F* I$ U3 a! e
off mundane desires and attain liberation.

Failing to see fame and wealth as illusions, one covets prestige and is ensnared in profit making.* h4 C* T: r; [) w" C. x
Being respectfully regarded as supreme, yet one still succumbs to the eight worldly concerns.% w2 P) q% ?: d, G- Q; ^
Striving to do good deeds without first renouncing the corporeal body, one inevitably heads to
* I+ t) \4 b4 b, e. pfuture lives empty-handed., W1 }( Y7 n7 l g
How downright miserable is this bleak prospect!- E8 Z" X' U( | F7 ^3 |, y, z
Unaware of the defects of samsara, one craves worldly enjoyment untiringly. h0 J: n5 ^0 f
Prattling hollow words all the time, one is nothing but a deceitful hypocrite.! d1 i5 ]/ Z+ p; N4 h/ A

None of your subjects will follow you when you die, you must bear the painful karma all by
) W! J5 n& N* OBrahmins, Indra, or Universal Monarchs enjoy great pleasures that are unreliable samsaric
2 V4 o- M/ I4 V0 J! K; T8 G' T3 t( vWhen they die, there is no guarantee to avoid lower realms, so become weary to samsara,
7 _" {1 _6 b) k7 [) M8 g7 _读到这些言教,联想到自己一生中虽然表面行善,但仔细观察,归根结底往往是为了自己
4 I! V; [& ?3 x- z6 p今生的利益。为众生、为来世的成分究竟有多少,没有很大把握。前辈大德们的高尚心行真令人羡慕。
1 R' R z" o, h. v/ F# HReading these, I reflected carefully on the seemingly good deeds I have done so far. Most of " p. N, i4 R9 x @2 S
them boiled down to self-serving for this life only; I am not even sure what portion of them has ( }7 a% |$ V! I, a; m Y# R4 q! @& X
been devoted to others or to future lives. How I admire the high realization and conduct of the
7 j ?) M. Y* _$ d* J6 R" {7 ~/ Taccomplished sages!
$ x) G# t6 ]* n( g2 t2 t与其临渊羡鱼,不如退而结网。从现在做起,也许还不是很晚。$ w2 c/ t; g0 X" z1 }7 Q& j
The adage goes: “Instead of wasting time longing for the fish by the pond, it’s better to go back
: I$ `2 s5 S% ]0 k1 rand prepare fishing nets.” I may as well take actions from now on; perhaps it’s still not too late!( f J. {+ k ?$ B4 z
