Spiritual practice is a challenging process that takes time and endurance. Longchen Rabjam says: ]! N5 q7 w5 k5 p
“Spiritual practice is not a few days’ effort only; it is a long struggle.” By practicing diligently and ; V0 } y) ^- W$ |/ M2 i5 c# r
persistently for a long period, not only we can sharpen our willpower but also accumulate vast & Q3 {8 e- j5 W; \ H4 \
merit.
9 J- ~5 ]: Z2 s$ S% X记得小时候有一位叫扎拉的阿姨,不仅年轻美丽,而且诚信佛法。她曾跟随村里人一起到' N$ G8 _5 h! O. N
拉萨朝圣。30年前,她曾在上师前发愿,每天磕头100个,念诵极乐愿文1遍,金刚萨埵心4 w, ?& v0 }! |: \) M W4 r
咒10000遍。当时尚处于宗教受到严重摧毁的恐怖时期,念经诵咒尚可默默完成,但磕头4 @5 k- S! k: V0 p# d2 Z! w
就有很大困难。除了在家里,她常在放牧时偷偷到一山洞里磕头,并叮嘱我为其放哨。常

Pure Land of Great Bliss, and recite 10,000 times the Vajrasattva mantra. That was 30 years ago 6 ?) c4 x- ]2 n5 R1 h" n, p
when religions were being destroyed ruthlessly. In that horrific period, one might manage to ' a4 Q/ {( f5 e' m
recite mantras or read sutras silently without getting caught; but prostrations presented a bigger
* F9 c( v8 f. U/ Eproblem. Besides doing it at home, she also tried the accumulation in mountain caves when ) S N8 r5 q7 D
herding, and would always ask me to stand guard for her. When no one was around, I would 2 c* |4 f( X1 \& O
always remind her: “It’s time for you to do prostrations!”8 j6 E. Z: r/ K7 ]( Z6 H
时光荏苒,30年时光匆匆流逝。其间我经历了读书、出家等一系列变故。去年7月,我在 g) p5 r8 Q& S& O0 m0 V K

this period I had gone through stages of schooling and become a monk. For her, the experience

“Are you still continuing prostrations and recitations?” She answered: “Certainly. I’ve never
! d& j8 u% J6 ^, u1 xstopped. Even if I missed them during my episodes of severe illness, I always managed to make
, x0 j- k5 m% Z7 t$ B0 `them up after recovery. Now, with more free time on hand, I can recite even more mantras.” I # i) _, b7 h, t; ~) n
asked, “Then, through all these years, how many prostrations and mantra recitations have you . o; }: j! f) v6 A+ c, X
done in total?” She replied, “I have not really kept track of them. I feel practicing alone is good
9 R; o/ J* M! {& W) R4 Venough and have never cared to count the numbers.”

, z3 r3 B1 b' r- q0 O3 g/ ufigures may seem astronomical. Drala is all but an average practitioner commonly seen among
: w% L" i! n! b% n) TTibetans, little known, nor extraordinarily diligent. Nonetheless, that she has kept her practice
/ T7 L* s _9 z3 l$ }8 }" Uthroughout 30 years with the perseverance of “grinding an iron pestle down to a needle” is truly
& z" y1 p: u6 V6 R6 Gpraiseworthy.
9 p0 w" v, d6 j2 \4 P8 H& @现在有的人修完一遍50万加行,就四处炫耀,唯恐他人不知。扎拉却能默默无闻,从不间& K6 u: a% C" _+ W9 Y2 C
断,的确令人叹服。反观自己,虽然在上师前发了愿,却没有如法行持,虽然被别人称为4 f S9 s! j: C8 D& d; B, x7 J
法师,却不如一个普通人,真令我汗颜。古人云:“骐骥一跃,不能千里;驽马十驾,功在: b0 q/ P# Z' B5 d- B, d1 H% s( Q# Z

These days there are practitioners who can’t wait to flaunt around their completion of one cycle

hand, cares not for recognition but only to practice persistently; she is indeed admirable. * A# q! g* ^ X6 k
Checking my own progress, I had made pledges before my master, but I have not practiced 7 M* ~7 D6 `' W9 L* g, |$ h, S1 I
authentically; I have been addressed as a spiritual teacher, but I am no better than common
: w7 v! J5 i% y1 j }5 G; [people. Shouldn’t I blush with shame?
; ?/ g& f2 E. g8 zThe ancient saying goes:- {8 S8 L$ p: r3 e* A5 u: l
One gallop of a noble steed remains one gallop of distance, not 10 gallops.4 Z/ l$ p3 g( `5 p5 l& E
Ten days of effort of pulling a cart by an inferior horse, on the other hand, would cover 10 days’ K; u/ ^* T, r" R" X; N
distance.
l% [! D( y0 mSuccess comes from doing the task persistently.& w; P, S! E$ {# w9 n+ x+ O
如果每个修行人都能有此精神,有一分付出,就一定会有一分收获的。
" t4 A8 G6 l hEvery practitioner should embrace such an enduring spirit. With every ounce of effort put in, % H4 E8 T' [4 s& F
there is bound to be an ounce of reward.
