失败 | On Failure 世间的人,不管是市井白丁还是朝廷命官,人人都希望为一己之利而拼搏。凡事务求一帆
8 T/ p6 D" I( F5 e, o P风顺,经不起半点挫折。其实,失败也未必一无是处。有一句古训说得好:“祸兮福所倚* K* A0 U& e( I/ K# K
,福兮祸所伏”。
; Y: I. p' G- \+ I. U) {8 H! cPeople in the world, be they illiterate hillbillies or government luminaries, all eagerly strive to1 S" x# [) U$ d% w0 S# V
fulfill their own interests. When doing anything, they want nothing but smooth sailing and
9 e! p2 H* t0 s a' B$ X( acannot bear the tiniest setbacks. But in fact, failure is not necessarily without merit. There is this! H' Y8 ?" |6 B: g. ?
adage:
) D1 u1 d* o' a% p% r: o- l, _7 ]Misfortune, that is where happiness depends;
* D. P) o- f" L m) ?5 D, q; YHappiness, that is where misfortune underlies.) p9 y, k+ w/ P* H3 O$ d
汉地近代高僧弘一法师,是集诗、词、书画、篆刻、音乐、戏剧、文学于一身的才子,先
! d6 O" ~+ V" `% M' j, z后培养出了名画家丰子恺、音乐家刘质平等一些文化名人。真可谓风流倜傥,才华盖世。& Q; \$ `) D* |* V) |% ]
出家后苦心向佛,过午不食,精研律学,被佛门弟子奉为律宗第十一代世祖。他为世人留5 P% \- Y0 q$ W2 x' M4 g
下了咀嚼不尽的精神财富,是中国绚丽至极而归于平淡的典型人物。4 |) l0 f8 W1 j" ~3 [3 j; k

number of celebrated artists such as Feng Zikai and the musician Liu Zhiping. Master Hong Yi had. R5 M3 Q7 f8 Y0 x
a carefree and elegant bearing and his achievement in arts and letters was unsurpassed in his
, |8 i$ H, u1 X2 l3 _* Qtime. After he chose to be ordained as a monk, he studied unremittingly Buddha’s teachings and' L, ?% x- f: ]
abided the sparing fare of no food after midday. He dedicated himself particularly to Vinaya; J3 g0 C6 h! u, L
pitaka and is revered as the 11th lineage holder of the Vinaya School. He has left a rich spiritual
6 o+ Y8 I0 N$ J( B1 Blegacy for future generations; in China, he stood out as a model figure whose life underwent a
/ p: h8 H+ h9 v2 Z; A8 X `$ Mtransformation from utter glory to utmost humbleness.
6 _4 X; ?& n( ^$ \' N0 O0 A* t0 G- c Z他在《闽南十年之梦影》中说道:“我的心情是很特别的,我只希望我的事情失败。因为/ g* @$ } Y3 U6 U# U# m7 C G$ `* W
事情失败和不完满,这才使我发大惭愧,能够晓得自己的德行欠缺,自己的修养不足。那
6 L3 i' r& S' L( l/ Z% M0 L( [ s我才可努力用功,努力改过迁善。无论什么事情,总希望它失败。失败才会发大惭愧。倘& j& G5 J/ f* e5 n# ^
若因成功而得意,那就不得了啦。”我特别喜欢背诵这段文字,这种有悖常人的思维,正: C* k# Z1 ?, j/ T% |6 w8 H
说明了法师的谦逊与大智大悟。; U1 |+ j" p4 O2 B' Q8 W
He wrote in Dreams of 10 Years in Minnan: “I have a rather peculiar mindset these days: I only- B& G, _+ B8 ^( z
wish for failure in the things I do. It is because failure and imperfection can make me feel humble; n5 R2 a1 v* P. A9 o9 o3 C
and abashed. Only then will I see my own inadequacies and lack of qualities, and strive to correct; j& M# n( j4 } G- p" L
myself for the better. Whatever I do, I invariably hope I will fail; failure teaches me humility.1 \ s* y& h; |2 R; d
Should I become successful, I might be puffed up with arrogance, which would be disastrous!”
+ s0 b" c% b u4 `! b4 HThis passage is my favorite to memorize, as the master’s unconventional way of thinking reveals: M4 `! ~6 f, r& d# i" _: h
his extraordinary realization and modesty.
; L K1 b* D/ B无垢光尊者在《窍诀宝藏论》中的最深要诀之一即是:“灭除我执恒自取失败。”朗日塘) W% R; T; e9 L- c- e
巴尊者也有“亏损失败我取受,胜利利益奉献他”的遗训,与弘一法师的话相比,实有异
7 B! J' J! D/ Y z曲同工之妙。不怕失败,敢于失败,真为大丈夫之胆识。
3 o" [6 t4 a7 {4 P4 HOne of the most profound teachings of the Omniscient Longchenpa in The Precious Treasury of
! O e* @5 f3 l( ?) B) P8 U# GPith Instructions is: “One must cut off self-clinging and choose failure always.” Langri Tangpa also2 S: T5 h% b, Q' c V- B
left the teaching:
$ e: B9 ~& j# [3 T% @' `% g* t/ OMay I take upon myself the defeat) L* M* ~& `9 H3 X0 v
And offer to others the victory.
2 U& E4 B8 t# e* Q# D5 O2 f( RThese teachings are fortunate coincidences with what Master Hong Yi has to say. The prowess of
! {. j7 R; ~+ u: u. n& d5 |3 qa truly brave man, after all, lies in his capacity to be unafraid of failure and willingly embrace
0 C; w- p! a, ]) s1 s9 ]failure.8 f, v" _8 @; @1 t% @+ ?* b( z
关于如何面对失败,世间也积累了不少以辨证的眼光看问题的格言,如 “塞翁失马,焉知9 [) w) l. n: r- e0 R8 P# l
非福。”“生于忧患,死于安乐。”而且,有不少的世间人,也懂得迂回的路必有其收获
3 e4 ?8 E( N: Z _) V。作家罗兰曾说过:“在人生途中,你每走一步,就必定会得一步的经验。不管这一步是, A5 J/ z. z7 G( p: I0 J
对还是错,‘对’有对的收获,‘错’有错的教训。绕远路,走错路的结果,你就恰如迷1 e2 c$ }' ]9 }9 C
路走入深山,别人为你的危险焦急惋惜之际,你却采集了一些珍奇的花果,获得了一些罕
( d/ a1 O" E5 K- _ h见的鸟兽。而且你多认了一段路,多锻炼出一分坚强与胆量。”# Q% m! b! ]* {" s [& ]
There are many proverbs in the world on how to face failure squarely. Many are the fruition of
) y- `+ a7 p- d; J3 b5 Cvalid analyses, such as: “When the old man lost his mare, who could have guessed it was a1 y9 T8 ~% V0 A9 y
blessing in disguise? A loss may well turn out to be a gain,” and, “In adversity, we thrive; in
. }8 p+ q1 p# ucomfort, we perish.” Many people also appreciate that a convoluted path is bound to provide
2 z2 a" ], ~# A4 Q# Y# T7 e- Zsome kind of reward. Writer Ruo Lan once said: “In life, every step we take brings the experience
- _2 j4 V8 v& Z! H6 [% Qof that one step. This has nothing to do with whether the step is right or wrong. The ‘right’ one
/ M, H6 m/ d. t- l1 U, V1 Lyields the right reward. The ‘wrong’ one presents lessons from being wrong. Taking the longer
M, b T% D/ I" f. g/ g! Jroute or walking on the wrong path is just like being lost in the deep mountains. While people7 Z% }7 M4 a5 B' H7 O# z) n
are worrying and bemoaning your safety, you hit the opportunity to collect rare flowers and
) I/ L" ]2 P& f( R. A7 Wberries, and you spot exceptional birds and animals. In addition, having to cover the extra
' `5 M) h5 U+ y& q# Wdistance, you have cultivated extra courage and tenacity.”
( n9 _- l" n* y1 m+ R5 o% @若能勇敢地面对失败,则将尝到其中的甘甜滋味。4 B1 `$ O, e) d. N
