今天是“五·四”青年节,从1919年五四运动至今已经历了近百年的历史。随着时代的变

7 U* j* W2 t8 V( `迁,青年们早已不必再为反封建、反压迫而战,他们以各种形式庆祝着这一节日。. M0 M! P! a8 {/ B! B! K% e$ n

Today is Youth Day; it was more than a hundred years ago when the May 4th Movement shook
) \  G" \( e/ G4 e! m
+ S- J0 y( A0 y. x* W  K' j8 K; bthe nation in 1919. As time goes by, however, young people these days no longer emphasize0 e7 o2 ~* k! e+ V& N
% i& o0 [$ @: W& ~: x/ V4 ]! D
fighting feudalism or oppression as their earlier peers did. Instead, they choose to celebrate their
; A: W% K. j( s
' i+ m" I3 k; p  eday in various ways.
5 @6 o  C; u! Y+ C: F  f
# p  \0 }( v+ |- H5 p我也加入了一帮有很多青年人组成的行列,举行了一次大规模的放生活动。三艘船承载着) x& X  C6 R& i8 w8 I, O' k2 g
; F, s9 R# f2 [- w& |
饱受死亡恐惧的海底居民,浩浩荡荡地驶往深海,除了厦门本地的信众,来自各地寺院、" n* }; y" @$ f' e& Q0 u

. L" ~0 W( E" U( z佛学院的出家人,福州、台湾、香港等地的居士,约200名道友都参加了这次放生活动,出6 I: X- p" Y7 R- S* y* J! P0 b
; v! P9 r) Z$ F% G" P
家人的红黄僧衣,在家人五彩缤纷的各式服装,在蓝色大海的衬托下,形成了一道道靓丽- |$ r, }3 P: c: {& R
  k) P+ \. _( x) `, Y# O9 P+ {
的风景。

7 o* ]. d1 p: W0 j% r. [I found myself in the company of young people to carry out large-scale life liberation. Three ships

loaded with many sea creatures whose lives were once at grave stake sailed off the coast in an; A; H' N& X+ \3 ^% Y* B
9 C+ {! a/ \' U9 D7 E" D2 ?
impressive formation. The 200 or so participants included local Buddhists from Xiamen, monks% l1 ?; [8 J5 D* d# {  L
+ T, N" J- f1 W/ c
and nuns from nearby monasteries and Buddhist Academies, as well as lay practitioners from
! T9 i; D! l" q: N9 S7 J
6 a6 p+ c4 E6 R. BFuzhou, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Against the blue sea, the maroon and yellow monastic robes

1 h7 Z. O7 o( C( t/ ^7 mand laities’ attire of various colors stood out vividly and brightly. It was quite a beautiful sight to

behold.# t1 Q0 V* O6 N5 [$ O1 ~% v' C+ a

在我身居其中的四个月期间,每当午餐和晚餐之时,窗户外面时常会漂来宰杀海鲜的血腥: j) N- o  Z7 i9 e, O

些可怜的鱼虾从屠刀下解救出来一直是我们未了的心愿。虽然今天解救的生灵与整个城市7 [1 L" r! D; [, D7 O

的杀生数量难以相比,但也能让我们稍感欣慰。

During my four-month stay in this coastal city, at lunch or dinner time the stench of seafood0 O+ o* ^* J( y" j2 k& i( f

1 x& Z8 H) g, _5 u0 i. Ibeing prepared often wafted through the open window, polluting the fresh air of the shore, and
+ |7 w1 d' t, S! y1 N6 i$ P! C" D- Z" I% o# y( Z
making my friend, also from Tibet, and me lose our appetites. We have long wished to save the2 k8 ~0 P) M$ z" K
; J/ \7 p: e% y! V7 b* Z  \
poor fish, shrimp, and so forth from meeting their ends at the knife, it is only today that we have5 y% v4 D& t: V' f5 k8 f; E
' m0 }5 E  H  w$ r- r
come to fulfill it. Even though the number of lives we are saving is incomparable with that of1 J1 n& \5 g3 b4 p

: G6 u: j8 _( a7 o0 V3 _, j4 ibeing killed in the whole city, we are still grateful for the opportunity., H7 K5 Q# m3 g8 t

/ @/ F, I" q" G0 ^+ q记得曾有一县令名曰潘公,在他上任期间,制定县规命令百姓不得入江湖渔捕,犯者加罪( n2 M2 T# Q. R- i
9 }: q0 F5 Q$ F
。当他后来去任时,水中发出号呼之声,如丧考妣。当地人听到后,莫不叹异。不知道什
4 Z) R* n" v( e2 l  i% t. N5 e$ t) i& P( {! N' c/ s; w
么时候厦门也能有这样的好县令,也能使这些生灵免受刀俎之苦。不过,此地的放生之风
% ~3 x, T* X3 l* [3 O3 G* Y1 R5 K1 d" }# d3 Q0 I: t, P
还算比较盛行,听说是一位居士发心印了一万册《放生功德文》,广为结缘,才使此风日$ Y" q0 }9 T* _! _# {, i# b, K6 F( o

$ [8 c. c. E, u& q+ T& r3 {益兴盛,继而流传下来的。

9 H5 @4 [# D6 {3 a! U/ W: m0 c+ A' U2 B: n7 f5 o+ B3 c# J
There was once a county magistrate name Poon Gong who forbade his subjects from catching
, ~& C/ w% Y' `/ A7 Y9 n+ V, Z5 C+ F. ?; q2 W) b8 g
any live fish by instigating severe punishments for perpetrators. Years later when he was about6 H3 z. Q) X0 h: N# V, @

4 X  f7 x$ l' G) A2 _- @to leave his official post, a wailing sound as grief-stricken as if one’s parents had been lost was
" c$ C6 g) o1 q" H+ e& B6 B7 s1 B  [; n5 b; u7 r2 g  N: y& b
heard from the waters, filling people’s hearts with sadness and amazement. I often wonder  ]" i% o7 u% X, \8 s) d
* W: Y2 P( B, ?7 M+ s
when such a benevolent county magistrate will appear again in Xiamen such that many beings
  Q: p& L. @1 e' i$ c8 ^) H8 T2 h. l- W+ J/ h( ]! Z( q8 z! N
will be saved from going under the knife. Nonetheless, the practice of lifesaving has been well4 l1 s! a8 |& M1 `/ i- e  ^
( d  ^/ X/ o1 q& S) |
accepted here, due largely to, I was told, the free distribution of 10,000 booklets of The Merit of
2 p5 K" M% O  |. v! Z
  c& a- e( L& |* n4 w% gReleasing Live Beings by an aspiring layperson. The tradition thus has gradually flourished and' k+ b$ J# q8 H" v/ g
2 M, N* h  f. J* D' a
come down to this day.( t/ L5 _( Q2 a6 B$ W$ a4 \
& n# b7 L% f7 ~9 L  |% a0 k
据说这是当地近年来规模最大的一次放生。不管规模大小,至少,这也是我们为这些生灵/ @4 I! i" U7 e% _1 E

- `* C8 v& o/ ^0 I* \4 L反对压迫而举行的一次抗议。善无大小,唯贵久长,日日增之,月月累之,但愿百年以后; ], G; c' J; z( Y. B2 b/ X
% C% |0 S/ c' ~! q' W3 U0 K- a
,生灵涂炭的悲剧不会再上演了。

Today’s lifesaving activity reportedly is the largest one in recent years in the area. Regardless of. X1 c  R% M  J. p4 s

  q( M: d6 V% w' i  j% X8 Mwhether the magnitude is large or small, at least we have made a revolt against oppression on3 n4 x4 b2 f: I2 _- O- z# k" Q8 \

8 g( O/ v/ P* q' f5 pbehalf of these sea creatures. The value of good deeds depends not so much on their scale but& A# Q) |- q) q3 n5 T0 K4 Z

more on their consistency. When virtues are practiced daily and enhanced monthly, we hope9 ~$ ]( L" Q' C, Q& w, N5 u* I- v

9 U) ~) G3 C$ `! i' g( G/ x5 pthat one hundred years from now, the tragedy of taking other beings’ lives will no longer exist.
