special about him. But now I see myself and others only doing spiritual practices in fits and starts.

We get serious only when we are in good spirits but as soon as our mood falls, we become

/ u2 v. J) I Z4 U5 Udistracted and lag behind in practice. The glaring contrast makes his perseverance all the more+ S" [2 O! l. |, g5 c; B
, v8 w" a" x+ qadmirable.

到1987年他去世,已念了五亿多心咒。真是不算不知道,一算吓一跳。和他的精进相比,8 a+ I6 w1 v; Y5 E. R N. N4 U) I

At the time of his passing at age 87, he had accumulated 500 million mantras, an astonishing

% R" V1 n3 r; G/ R# E5 g7 Y; W* R: v" [
diligence with his, I really feel ashamed.

《大乘阿毗达磨论》云:“诸资粮道修行人应精进闻思,诸根调柔,饮食适当,上、下半$ j* s& H, t- p2 Y
" u! Z6 D5 s0 v夜不入眠(意为只睡中夜)。”! I2 J! \1 o0 k4 c. e7 t
0 [3 S- {6 G7 u3 G' M7 M6 HIn Mahayana Abhidharma Sangiti Shastra it says: “Practitioners on the path of accumulation

should endeavor in studying, contemplating, and meditating on the Dharma; to tame the six

senses, eat appropriately, and avoid sleeping in the early or late part of the night (that is, to sleep( h0 g. j& I8 j8 F! W8 N
" e( S1 g0 |, `( a' J
only in the middle section of the night).”

0 J, S; `+ V% `+ H7 [“不积跬步,无以至千里;不积小流,无以成江海。”9 ]& x& d) M6 L0 \

Without adding up many little steps, a journey of a thousand miles cannot be accomplished.

- l) a7 l/ a4 ]( m3 ], D( \4 l+ WWithout the pouring together of many tiny streams, there will be no big oceans., w" s6 P7 F5 F+ m
i7 F/ G6 R- ?8 M. x7 i一时的勤奋不算什么,一生的勤奋才是最重要的。& P3 s: j+ n* E. x4 `# F: F+ ^
! C3 F- ~, c9 vAn on-and- off diligence amounts to nothing; only the diligence over a lifetime is what counts.
