中遭遇强盗所致。这不但没有影响他的形象,反而使他显得更加可爱。, R2 p- c, [& G

He was a man of strong build. His hand perpetually moved the mala beads and his mouth

constantly recited mantras. On his face there was a scar left by robbers he encountered when as

a young man he was making a trip on foot to Lhasa. This facial mark, instead of being a blemish,/ {+ z1 g }$ e( o3 H k$ z

读小学期间,我一直住在他家。每天天还没亮,他就开始起床,一边念咒,一边磕头。饭+ Y* K+ A1 A2 n$ K9 @

后,就开始看书和念诵一天的功课,下午坐禅,晚上念经。十几年来,周而复始,从不间5 q. v- f8 ~0 }6 f7 o4 |
1 `3 A, D) r7 ]# @7 D( o" _断。

" t, E0 ^2 R K! `- `! ?I took room and board at his house when I was attending elementary school. Every day before

" [; x$ O# E2 F& vdawn, he would get up and start to do prostrations and at the same time recite prayers. After2 [1 R+ F) Y& z
q# P) Y8 y Y4 Q" J
breakfast, he would read books and go over his daily Dharma practices. He sat in meditation in
( a- p" k6 h; f' z/ V$ @" P- t- }% z( v# B( A- M
the afternoon and recited scriptures in the evening. For over 10 years he kept the same schedule/ a0 f" Q2 b0 {" L. F$ L% I
- b/ |3 D4 e, hover and over again without interruption.
) D% K R9 E0 ~, k. i8 x i! i7 ` A, u
当时我以为,作为修行人本来就应当这样,所以不足为奇。如今,当我意识到我和我周围

5 e7 Q* a' R' G2 `5 T的人大多是三天打鱼,两天晒网,心情好的时候就精进,心情不好的时候就散乱的情形,3 |3 G9 A7 x4 }0 A4 i9 ]

才知道他的毅力的确值得赞叹。

At that time I took it for granted that all practitioners should behave as he did, and felt nothing. s; v1 m1 n) `# M
2 D' |5 v/ p' i4 z" k) R; L) Bspecial about him. But now I see myself and others only doing spiritual practices in fits and starts.+ V. W" J/ b; P( g* d, W" j; p8 c
/ `1 w2 P* e) d6 H3 LWe get serious only when we are in good spirits but as soon as our mood falls, we become6 H5 K5 U/ u$ H* G
8 E4 n' M1 h: W0 M6 h& s# f
distracted and lag behind in practice. The glaring contrast makes his perseverance all the more* A: c# E3 F# W8 h0 {6 |
8 O$ C" @4 S8 Hadmirable.

0 A+ Y/ P+ L7 J8 w到1987年他去世,已念了五亿多心咒。真是不算不知道,一算吓一跳。和他的精进相比,4 A/ R" ?' O1 v+ A0 O8 J; A
$ k, i4 b" A, U y
实在令我惭愧。; G% F; e, f# P8 K" ^2 ^% z
* R# T' X6 u6 [, P; x' l& ~
At the time of his passing at age 87, he had accumulated 500 million mantras, an astonishing) f6 |" Y6 Q( b% g7 b% Q: f. B
) B8 }& y1 P5 K% @" N: dnumber that could remain unrecognized without adding it all up. Comparing my meager: v- f$ V; K, @. c3 H7 q [

diligence with his, I really feel ashamed.4 Q$ ]/ `4 ?9 q4 |# G) U
5 i, @4 s# R' u& z; t《大乘阿毗达磨论》云:“诸资粮道修行人应精进闻思,诸根调柔,饮食适当,上、下半 W0 w/ i( e5 {8 v& z0 r
: r0 Z3 I4 b5 \' V' K" }& f1 t夜不入眠(意为只睡中夜)。”
: W' d6 t9 F- g2 g. b2 a) Q: J0 r8 j# a- T! u% @6 H
In Mahayana Abhidharma Sangiti Shastra it says: “Practitioners on the path of accumulation

) l6 W" v$ u+ \/ x' Ishould endeavor in studying, contemplating, and meditating on the Dharma; to tame the six1 H" k. N3 K9 Y% I6 }2 H
1 `+ O) @$ T/ h9 o/ R ]3 u# Usenses, eat appropriately, and avoid sleeping in the early or late part of the night (that is, to sleep7 i6 I1 C& K/ P( ^: ], Q
, z4 A. ]6 I& G( qonly in the middle section of the night).”

“不积跬步,无以至千里;不积小流,无以成江海。”

( Z' U- o1 a) `3 T1 S1 X7 D8 Q7 y! dWithout adding up many little steps, a journey of a thousand miles cannot be accomplished.

Without the pouring together of many tiny streams, there will be no big oceans.+ Z" \( J5 s! j5 K" {! p( U( I
4 t" v& I& q" v `一时的勤奋不算什么,一生的勤奋才是最重要的。
( Z. [" g! T4 P+ h5 q% ]: [. ~7 p! j% F5 b* J- [2 e% h+ l! [9 c p
An on-and- off diligence amounts to nothing; only the diligence over a lifetime is what counts.
