Israel army to test tank shell against anti-tank squads

JERUSALEM, July 30 -- Israel Defense Force (IDF) is set to test a

new type of tank shell, aiming at neutralizing enemy's anti-tank missile squads,

in the coming week, local daily The Jerusalem Post reported Thursday.

The shell, called Calanit and suitable for 120 mm cannons, can be fired

beyond a hill and stop in mid-air, then explode on top of the anti-tank missile

squads, which always hide behind structures or a hill to attack IDF tanks, the

report said.

The shell is developed by Israel Military Industries.

The report suggested that the new shell may be prepared for potential

conflicts with Shiite Lebanese group Hezbollah, which was said to fire thousands

of anti-tank missiles at IDF during the Israeli-Lebanese war in 2006.
