Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi has called on China and the U.S. to meet each other halfway to ensure a successful virtual summit between their two leaders and bring bilateral ties back to the right track.

Wang made the remarks in a phone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Saturday, shortly after the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced that the video meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden will take place on Tuesday morning.

Wang highlighted the leading role of the two leaders in the development of China-U.S. relations and noted that a good result is the common aspiration of two peoples and the international community.

Speaking of the wrong remarks made recently by the U.S. on Taiwan questions, Wang reiterated that the history and the reality have proved that "Taiwan independence" is the biggest threat to the peace and stability of the region.

Any support to "Taiwan independence" forces will damage the regional peace and eventually cause damage to itself, Wang said.

He urged the U.S. to state its opposition to any "Taiwan independence" moves clearly and firmly uphold the commitments made in the three China-U.S. joint communiques.

He also called on the U.S. to stick to its one-China policy with concrete actions instead of sending wrong signals to "Taiwan independence" forces.

Blinken, for his part, said both sides are fully prepared for the summit as it has great attention around the globe.

Vowing that the U.S. would exchange its views on bilateral relations under a spirit of mutual respect, Blinken said he hopes that the two sides would send strong signals to the world through the meeting.
